So you get to drive things like his circular tank with the cannons sticking out from all sides. This is actually really cool since destroying them inevitably means using them first. Anyway, Leonardo sells you a few items (including the aforementioned parachute and poison dart gun) but his main role is building war machines that you need to go destroy so the Borgia can't use them. Your main historical figure / friend is Machievelli, who doesn't give you cool stuff like Leo did so I liked him less. Leonardo DaVinci is still around, but he plays less of a role this time. There were a few times when I didn't notice this and proceeded to jump off a high tower, hit the parachute button, only to go splat on the paving stones. and not giving them back after the mission is finished. However, the game has an annoying habit of disabling your parachute capability during a mission, which it does by taking away all your parachutes.

They are an expendable item so you have to buy new ones to replenish your stock, which isn't really a problem since you have a pretty big inventory of them. This is a purely optional accessory, but it's a pretty cool way to get down from high places without the tedious process of dropping and grabbing ledges. Between the crossbow and the poison dart gun (another new weapon) some missions are almost a little too easy since killing people while remaining undetected basically just becomes a question of whether you have enough crossbow / dart gun ammo available. Well, you get it in this game and it's dang useful. In the opening sequence for the original AC, Altair is shown using a crossbow to thump people over the head with, and since then I've been waiting for my freaking crossbow. The climbing puzzles and combat are pretty much the same, as are your basic weapons, but you acquire a few new gizmos that are pretty cool. There is a LOT of stuff to see and do - it felt like more than the prior games in fact. At first glance that seems like it would be a more limited world, but it really isn't. Rather than having multiple cities to explore as in the prior versions, you are pretty much confined to Rome for this game (with a few side trips thrown in). The basic mechanics of the game are all intact so rather than re-hash all of that I'll just focus on what is new / different. Like the other AC installments, you start off fully powered then manage to lose all your gear and abilities which you spend much of the remainder of the game re-acquiring, or upgrading. You are still experiencing Ezio's memories in the Italian Renaissance and the story pretty much picks up shortly after the AC2 story ended.

That's probably true in a number of ways since this release is really more of a continuation of the prior version than anything else. I believe it was supposed to be a trilogy but the third installment isn't the end so I guess it's fair to consider AC: Brotherhood to be AC 2.5.
